Where Western 30A Gets Its Seafood and Its Sunset Dinners With Goatfeathers and Vue Both Closed

Just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, South Walton Fire District crews pulled up at the corner of County Highway 30A and Gulfview Heights and found heavy fire on the second floor of Goatfeathers. Deputies closed the intersection in both directions. Crews worked for hours to keep the roof and second floor from collapsing. Investigators' first findings pointed to an accidental kitchen fire. Nobody was hurt. The building was badly damaged.

Five weeks later, on September 14, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club announced that Vue on 30a had closed permanently.

Each loss stands on its own. Together they left a specific hole on the western end of 30A, because each building did two jobs. Goatfeathers was a seafood market and a seafood restaurant in one place. Vue was a Gulf view and a special-occasion dining room in one place. Neither pairing has a single replacement right now, so this fall each of those four jobs goes to its own address.

The building that sold fish and cooked it

Goatfeathers' own line is "Since 1988," and it describes the business as "One restaurant, Two Seafood Markets." The menu points to fresh fish "cut from our Market," along with Black Angus steaks and homemade sauces and soups. By the business's own count, it has steamed more than 1,000,000 pounds of shrimp and buys more than 3,500 pounds of shrimp and 1,000 pounds of fresh fish every week.

Those weekly figures matter because they show the size of the market side. A building moving more than two tons of seafood a week does more than serve a dinner crowd. It also keeps fish on the stove in a lot of nearby kitchens. Losing Goatfeathers means losing that fish counter and the upstairs dining room at the same time, and each one has to be replaced separately.

Owner Pat Miller's update offered no date. "At this point, we do not know exactly how long Goatfeathers will be closed," he wrote. "Realistically, we expect it could be at least six months, and even that may be optimistic." He also wrote that the business is "committed to doing everything we can to move forward, rebuild, and reopen as soon as possible." Six months from the August 12 fire is mid-February 2027, and that is the most hopeful reading of his estimate. In practice, the gap covers the whole fall and winter.

The building that framed the Gulf

Vue's history goes back to 1971, when the original Beach Club opened on the Gulf. Over five decades it became a place for celebrations, special-occasion dinners, and sunsets. The Club said routine maintenance led to a professional evaluation. That evaluation found water intrusion and related indoor air quality problems in parts of the building. The problems could have been fixed, but only with a large investment and a long timeline. The building was already slated for replacement under the Club's long-range master plan, so the Board chose to close Vue for good.

"Vue has been so much more than a restaurant," said Steve O'Brien, President of the Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club Board of Directors. "It has been part of the fabric of this Club and this community for generations."

The Club has not published a design or construction timeline for whatever replaces it. So the anniversary dinner, the visiting-parents dinner, and the sunset you plan a week ahead all need a new table, with no set date for when the old one returns.

Four jobs, four addresses

Here is where each job lands this fall, using only places with current, verifiable evidence that they are open.

What the closed building did Where it can go this fall The detail that matters
Retail Gulf seafood to cook at home Buddy's Seafood Market, 5231 E County Hwy 30A, Seagrove Open seven days, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with takeout steamed shrimp
A casual seafood dinner out Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, 1875 S County Hwy 393, Gulf Place; Stinky's Fish Camp, 5960 W County Hwy 30A Shunk Gulley has Gulf views; Stinky's has Gulf seafood, oysters, and live music next door
A Gulf view at the table Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar; Fish Out of Water at WaterColor Inn Both have documented Gulf views
A special-occasion dinner Fish Out of Water; Café Thirty-A, 3899 E Scenic Hwy 30A, Seagrove Fish Out of Water has a private Wine Room; Café Thirty-A requires reservations

Shunk Gulley and Fish Out of Water each appear in two rows. They come closest to filling the gap Vue left, because each one puts a Gulf view and a full meal in the same room.

Fish for your own kitchen

Buddy's Seafood Market is the clearest replacement for the Goatfeathers counter. It sells retail seafood alongside takeout steamed shrimp. The case features wild-caught Florida shrimp and local fish when available, including grouper, snapper, and mahi-mahi. Its online ordering page lists the Seagrove shop at 5231 E County Hwy 30A, open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The steamed shrimp keeps the same Friday-night routine going: pick up a pound or two on the way home and skip cooking.

Shrimpers Seafood Market at 4444 Hwy. 98 W is still listed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a seafood retail market. We could not find a recent source confirming its current hours, so call before you make the drive.

The Gulf at the table

Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar sits at 1875 S County Hwy 393 at Gulf Place. Its panoramic bar looks out over the Gulf and the white-sand beach. The menu runs to local seafood, oysters, and grouper, and there is live music daily. In 30A's 2026 Hot Spot Awards, published in April, Shunk Gulley won outdoor dining, finished second in casual dining behind Grace Pizza and Shakes 30A, and won the category for watching the big game. It covers both Goatfeathers' casual seafood dinner and Vue's Gulf view. A football Saturday crowd is a different setting from a quiet anniversary dinner, though, so the time of your visit matters.

Fish Out of Water at WaterColor Inn comes closest to the occasion side of Vue. The restaurant describes itself as Gulf-front, with sunset views from its dining spaces. The kitchen serves coastal and Southern seafood with seasonal dishes and cocktails. The private Wine Room is set up for celebrations. A WaterColor article dated April 2, 2026 says it serves lunch and dinner daily, with weekend brunch in season. For a birthday dinner that would have gone on the Vue calendar, the Wine Room is the closest match.

When the water is a lake

Old Florida Fish House at 33 Heron's Watch Way in Seagrove Beach has outdoor dining beside Eastern Lake and a dock. The view it advertises is of the lake. It serves fresh seafood and sushi, with live music and regular dueling pianos. 30A's event calendar lists live music there starting October 5. It placed second for outdoor dining in the 2026 Hot Spot Awards, just behind Shunk Gulley.

A few well-established western 30A spots fill the seafood-dinner or occasion role without advertising a water view:

  • Café Thirty-A, 3899 East Scenic Hwy. 30A in Seagrove Beach, serves casual fine dining with an eclectic menu, wine, and martinis. Dinner is by reservation only. It won fine dining in the 2026 Hot Spot Awards.
  • Stinky's Fish Camp, 5960 W County Hwy 30A, serves Gulf seafood, oysters, and Cajun-coastal cooking, with daily happy hour, weekend brunch, and live music at Stinky's Bait Shack next door.
  • The Red Bar, 70 Hotz Ave in Grayton Beach, is known for its small menu, its crab cakes, and live music. It won the live music category in 2026.

One recent addition belongs here too. Beach Happy Cafe + Cocktails and its flagship 30A Store opened in Seagrove after a July 1 ribbon-cutting at 5311 E County Hwy 30A. It serves coffee, food, and cocktails next to a coastal retail shop. It is a casual stop rather than a dinner spot, and it opened the same summer the other two buildings closed.

Two closures on very different timelines

The two buildings are not in the same position. Goatfeathers has a stated plan to rebuild and reopen. The owner expects a closure of at least six months and called even that possibly optimistic. Counted from the August 12 fire, six months runs to mid-February 2027. Vue is permanently closed. Its building was already in line for replacement under the Club's master plan, and no replacement design or schedule has been announced.

For the seafood counter and the casual dinner, the current setup has a likely end point, and Buddy's and Shunk Gulley cover the gap in the meantime. For the Gulf-view celebration dinner, the change is open-ended. Fish Out of Water and Shunk Gulley are the two current, documented places on this stretch of 30A where the Gulf and dinner share a room. The seasonal brunch and the Wine Room put Fish Out of Water closer to the role Vue played.
